The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD (Garfield) is a prospective, multicentre, international registry of patients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF). Garfield is an academic research initiative led by the Thrombosis Research Institute, London. It is designed to determine in real-life practice the management of newly-diagnosed patients with AF with at least one additional risk factor for stroke. Antibiotics are often prescribed to patients seeing their GP with a cough when the GP suspects the patient has a Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (LRTI; also known as a chest infection). Many patients are prescribed antibiotics because the GP does not have the tools to predict which people might develop complications (and may therefore benefit from antibiotics). The aim of this study is to determine if we can predict which patients seeing their GP with a cough and suspected LRTI will go onto develop severe complications, i.e. pneumonia that requires hospitalisation.
